Why host social gatherings?
Elderly residents in long-term care homes, particularly those who experience memory decline and physical mobility difficulties, are often socially isolated. To help them improve their emotional, social, and intellectual wellness, we visit these centers and bond with these residents through recreational group and individual activities. We engage with residents of various dementia stages.
Some of these activities include playing board games, having conversations, engaging in sing-alongs, creating arts and crafts, and playing with 3D-printed building blocks together. We also utilize iN2L, a wellness-focused digital platform, to provide a range of evidence-based recreational activities. Although these are simple pleasures, providing companionship can truly make a difference in these individuals' worlds as it creates a welcoming space for self-expression and purpose.
Volunteer
Interested in learning more about how brains change from a first hand perspective and in a clinical setting, gain exposure to patient stories, and form close intergenerational relationships with elderly? Fill out the form below to join our student-led group in leading these social events in senior homes. Beginning in 2024, our group will visit facilities in the Bay Area. If you are not based in the Bay Area, we may match you to volunteer for/lead a virtual social group. Everyone is welcome to volunteer regardless of prior experience.
